Auditory Perception and Cognition Society Travel and Membership Awards
Supporting Diversity & Inclusion in Auditory Science
The Auditory Perception and Cognition Society is pleased to announce the second annual APCS Travel and Membership Awards. We will annually award up to two (2) undergraduate or graduate students from underrepresented populations broadly defined a stipend of $500 USD to support their attendance at our annual APCAM meeting. In addition, we will annually award free APCS membership/APCAM registration to up to ten (10) additional APCAM participants. All participants with financial need, regardless of rank, are eligible for the free membership award.
Travel Award Eligibility
- Undergraduate and graduate students from populations traditionally underrepresented in academia (e.g., including but not limited to representation on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, disability, and those from locations outside the US) are encouraged to apply for the travel award.
- Applicants for the travel award must be the first author and presenter of a poster or talk submitted for presentation at the APCAM 2023 Conference.
Travel Award Recipients Receive
- Competitive travel award ($500 USD).
- Free membership to APCS for one year (including APCAM registration).
- A special notation in the Abstract Book indicating the honor.
- Honor that can be listed on the student’s vita.
Membership Award Eligibility
- All APCS members with substantial financial need are encouraged to apply for the free membership award.
- Applicants for the free membership program must be the presenter of a poster or talk submitted for presentation at the APCAM 2023 Conference.
Membership Award Recipients Receive
- Free membership to APCS for one year (including APCAM registration).
- A special notation in the Abstract Book indicating the honor.
- Honor that can be listed on the member’s vita.
Application Process
- Applicants must submit an abstract for the 2023 Auditory Perception Cognition and Action Meeting (APCAM) conference by September 17, 2023;
- After abstract submission, applicants should complete the APCS Diversity Awards application also by September 17, 2023, including:
- Abstract title of your submitted abstract for APCAM 2023.
- Indicate whether you are applying for the membership award or the travel award (which also includes membership).
- Personal Statement (500 word limit) - Please briefly explain how you fit the criteria for this award and how the award will help support your journey in the field of auditory science.
- Contact information for someone willing to support your application for the APCS Travel Award (not required for Membership Award).
Process Overview
- The Chair of the APCS Diversity & Inclusion Committee (Laura Getz), as well as two additional members of the APCS Board (Laurie Heller and Emma Greenspon), were appointed by the Chair of the APCS Board for a two-year term on the committee. The Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee appointed two non-Board APCS members for staggered two-year terms (Jenny Roche, year 2 and CJ Joyner, year 1).
- The Diversity & Inclusion Committee members will review each nomination and make their recommendation to the Chair, who will forward the list to the APCS Board for final approval.
- Successful candidates are notified by the Society within 2-3 weeks after the deadline.
- Recipients are not eligible for the travel award in the following year’s competition.
